Getting started

The Make pages, one by one

7 minute read

Make is the group of four pages in your sidebar: Designs, Match a photo, Mockups, and Supplies. This guide walks you through the first job on each page.

Want more on a page? Each part ends with the name of a longer guide. You can find any guide by its name in the search box at the top of the help pages.

Designs: add your first design

Designs is your library of stitch files. Each design keeps its file, its stitched size, its stitch count, and the thread colors you used last time. The page has two tabs along the top: Designs and Fonts.

  1. 1
Open Designs in the Make group of your sidebar.
  2. 2
Drag a ZIP or your stitch files onto the "⬆ Import machine files" button at the top of your designs. You can also click the button and drop the files in the panel that opens.
  3. 3
Broidry reads each file and groups the formats of one design together, like a .pes and a .dst of the same design. Check the names it shows.
  4. 4
Click the Save button at the bottom of that panel. The button shows how many designs you are adding, like "Save 1 design to the library".
  5. 5
Your design is in the library with its size and stitch count filled in from the file. If you have no stitch file yet, click "+ Add design" and type the name and size yourself.

Designs: add a font you own

The Fonts tab holds every lettering font you offer your customers. Broidry comes with built-in fonts. You can also add embroidery fonts you bought.

  1. 1
On the Designs page, click the Fonts tab.
  2. 2
Under "Add your own fonts", click "I have per-letter files". If your font only came as a .bx file, click "I only have a .bx file" instead. If the font is built into your embroidery software, click "My font is built into my software".
  3. 3
Type the name your customers should see in the Font name box.
  4. 4
Drag in the zip your font came in, or the letter files themselves, named by their letter like A.pes. You can also click "Pick stitch files" and choose them.
  5. 5
Click "Add font". Your font is ready as soon as the files upload.
Note: Want more on Designs? Read "Letting buyers pick from your design library" and "Fonts and your thread drawer."

Match a photo: find the design in a customer's picture

Match a photo is for the picture a customer sends with "can you make me this?" Most of those pictures are a design someone already sells as a stitch file. This page helps you find where it is sold, so you can buy the file and price the order from its real stitch count.

Match a photo searches the web with your picture. To look through your own designs, use the search box on your Designs page.

  1. 1
Open Match a photo in the Make group of your sidebar.
  2. 2
If the picture is a screenshot of a message, crop it down to the design first. The photo goes to Google. Cropping keeps your customer's name out of it.
  3. 3
Drop the photo on the box that says "Drop the customer's photo here". You can also click the box to choose the photo, or paste a screenshot onto the page.
  4. 4
Click "Search Google Lens with this photo →". Google Lens opens in a new tab and shows everywhere that design appears, including the listing it came from.
  5. 5
No luck with the photo? Under "Or search Etsy by words", type a few words that describe the design, like highland cow sunflower, and click "Search Etsy".

Match a photo: what the result means for your quote

A search ends one of three ways. The Match a photo page lists them too, under "What the result means for your quote".

Found it for sale: buy the file. It usually costs $3 to $8. The listing shows the exact stitch count, so you can price it from your rate card: stitch count, blank, and hooping. There is no digitizing fee. Once you buy the file, bring it into Designs with "⬆ Import machine files" like any other design.

No match anywhere: the picture is custom art and needs digitizing. Quote the digitizing fee from your rate card. Give the stitching price once the digitized file shows the real stitch count.

It belongs to a brand, a team, or a character: stitching and selling a sports logo, a cartoon character, or a brand mark without permission can get a shop's Etsy store or Facebook page taken down. Offer the customer a design of your own that has the same feel instead.

Mockups: show the customer their piece

Mockups opens the Mockup Studio. It puts your customer's words or one of your designs on a photo of a real blank. Everything shows at its real stitched size in your own hoop.

The first time you open it, tell the studio which hoops you own. On the right side of the studio, under "The hoop you are using", click "Add or remove the hoops you own" and check each hoop you have.

  1. 1
Open Mockups in the Make group of your sidebar.
  2. 2
Click "Add a blank you stock", or drag a photo of the garment onto the page. A flat, straight-on photo in good light works best. Give the blank a real name and type how wide the garment is in the photo, edge to edge.
  3. 3
Type your customer's words, then pick a font and a thread color. To place a design from your library instead, click Add a design.
  4. 4
Drag the words where you want them on the garment. Drag the bottom corner circle to resize them.
  5. 5
Click "Check spelling and send". The studio shows how each set of words will stitch and asks you to confirm the spelling.
  6. 6
Email the mockup to your customer from the studio, or click "Download the mockup picture" to save it and send it wherever you talk to them.
Note: Making a mockup for an order? Open the order and click Mock this up. The customer's words, font, and thread arrive in the studio already filled in. To learn everything else in the studio, read the guide called "The Mockup Studio, start to finish."

Supplies: add a blank and your thread

Supplies holds your blanks and your thread drawer. Blanks are the garments you stitch on. Each blank's cost goes into your quotes. Customers pick from its colors and sizes. Your thread drawer holds the spools you own. Customers pick thread colors from your drawer. Those colors also show up in your mockups.

  1. 1
Open Supplies in the Make group of your sidebar.
  2. 2
Under "Add your first blank", click the kind of garment you stitch on, like + Hat. Once you have a blank, you will find the same buttons under "Add a blank for another garment".
  3. 3
A list of common blanks for that garment opens. Click Add on the one you use, or type the brand and style number yourself in the form.
  4. 4
Under "Your thread drawer", click "+ Add threads" and pick your thread's brand from the Brand list. If your brand is not there, pick "Another brand. Add my own" and type in the brand, the thread number, and the color name.
  5. 5
Find a color by its number or name and click "+ Add" next to it. The button changes to "In your drawer ✓" once the color is added. Click "Done adding" when you have added your colors.
