For shops that sell on Shopify

Shopify sells your embroidery. Broidry holds the custom order.

If you sell ready-made pieces, Shopify is a good store. Custom orders are harder. You can't fix the spelling after checkout. The mockup approval stays in your email. Here's what Shopify costs, where it falls short on custom orders, and how Broidry works with the Shopify store you have now.

What Shopify does well

A full store with your own checkout

Shopify gives you a whole online store with a cart, a checkout, and shipping rates. If you sell ready-made hats, towels, and sweatshirts, that's what you want.

One account online and at markets

Shopify's point of sale takes cards in person on every plan. Your market sales and your online sales sit in the same reports.

Card rates drop as you grow

Shopify Payments costs 2.9% plus 30 cents online on Basic. The rate goes down on the bigger plans. A higher plan only pays off once your sales are large enough to cover its monthly price.

Where it falls short for custom embroidery

A typo the customer catches after checkout stays on the Shopify order

A personalization box on a Shopify product saves what the customer typed onto the order. Shopify's order editor lets you add or remove products, change quantities, and update shipping. In June 2025 Shopify staff confirmed there is no way to change those typed lines through order editing. So when the customer writes back that it's Kaitlynn with two n's, the paid order still says Kaitlyn. The right spelling lives in an email.

The personalization box is extra work to set up

Shopify products come with sizes and colors. A box where the customer types a name is added in your theme's code or with an app from the Shopify App Store. An app adds its own settings to learn.

A custom piece doesn't have a fixed price

Shopify sells a product at the price you set for it. A left-chest name is easy to list. A customer's own logo on a full back is priced from the stitch count and the garment. That job turns into a back-and-forth by email before you can send a price.

The customer pays before they've seen the piece

On Shopify the customer pays at checkout. They approve the design afterward, in an email thread. In Broidry the customer sees the mockup and presses "It looks perfect, approve this mockup" on the order itself, next to the payment.

Paid isn't the same as ready to stitch

Shopify's order list tells you what was paid and what was shipped. It doesn't tell you which jobs need a mockup, which are waiting on the customer, and which you can hoop today.

Keep Shopify and let Broidry hold the custom order

You don't have to pick one. Connect your store once on Broidry's Import page. You make a small app inside your own Shopify account. The steps are printed on the Shopify card. From then on, every paid Shopify order shows up on your board as a paid order. It has every personalization line the customer typed at checkout. Shopify sends each order over as it happens. Broidry also checks your store every hour in case one is missed.

When the customer writes back with a new spelling, you fix the words on the Broidry order. If the order changes on Shopify later, Broidry adds what changed to the order's notes and never writes over your fix. When you mark the order fulfilled on Shopify, the Broidry order closes itself with the tracking number on it. Orders from before you connected stay off your board. The Shopify card lists the ones that are paid and not yet fulfilled.

For the jobs Shopify can't price, like a customer's logo or a full back, one line of code puts your Broidry order form on a page of your Shopify store. The customer asks for the custom piece without leaving your site.

The Shopify help page walks through the setup. The works-with page lists the other stores Broidry connects to.

Shopify alone is enough if

  • Most of what you sell is ready-made stock with set prices.
  • Your personalized pieces are simple: a name or monogram in one or two fonts you list as options.
  • Spelling fixes after checkout are rare and you're comfortable keeping them in your email.

If that's you, add a line to your product page asking the customer to check the spelling before checkout. The questions to ask before you stitch guide has the confirmation wording. The misspelled name guide covers who pays when a wrong name gets stitched anyway.

What it costs

Shopify Basic is $39 a month paid monthly, or $29 a month paid yearly. Card payments online through Shopify Payments cost 2.9% plus 30 cents on Basic. Broidry's Free plan gives you up to 15 orders a month. It takes a 2% fee on payments that go through Broidry. Broidry takes no fee on a sale paid on Shopify. The Maker plan ($19 a month) makes orders unlimited and drops the fee to 1.5%. The Shop plan is $39 a month and the Atelier plan is $79 a month. My own rate card has a $20 minimum on every custom order. Broidry adds it to every quote. See the full details on the pricing page.

Questions people ask

How much does Shopify cost for an embroidery shop?

Shopify's Basic plan is $39 a month paid monthly, or $29 a month paid yearly. Grow is $105 a month ($79 yearly) and Advanced is $399 ($299 yearly). Card payments through Shopify Payments cost 2.9% plus 30 cents online on Basic, so a $48 custom hoodie costs you about $1.69 in card fees. If you use a payment company other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% on Basic. These are Shopify's published prices as of November 2026. Check their pricing page before you set your own prices.

Can a customer fix their personalization after they pay on Shopify?

Not on the Shopify order. Shopify's order editor lets you add or remove products, change quantities, and update shipping fees. Shopify staff confirmed in June 2025 that the typed personalization lines can't be changed through order editing. Most shops keep the fix in an email and hope it gets read before the hoop goes on. In Broidry you change the words on the order. That's the version your work sheet prints.

Can I keep my Shopify store if I use Broidry?

Yes. Your store keeps selling. Your checkout stays the same. On Broidry's Import page you connect the store with an app you make inside your own Shopify account. It takes about five minutes. After that, every paid Shopify order shows up on your board as a paid order. Each order shows the customer, the items, and every personalization line they typed. Your active Shopify products come over with their photos and prices.

Will my Shopify customers get extra emails from Broidry?

No. Shopify already sent them an order confirmation, so Broidry doesn't send a second receipt or duplicate order updates. You can still message a customer about their order from the order's conversation in Broidry.

Does Broidry charge a fee on my Shopify sales?

No. A sale the customer paid for on Shopify never goes through Broidry, so Shopify's fees are the only ones on it. On Broidry's Free plan, Shopify orders count toward the 15 orders a month. The Maker plan ($19 a month) makes orders unlimited.

Shopify's plan prices and card rates come from Shopify's pricing page, which we checked in November 2026. Take cards on Square instead? See Broidry vs Square Invoices. Selling on Etsy too? See Broidry vs Etsy.
