Use a font that came built into your embroidery software

Most embroidery programs come with fonts already inside them. You never bought those fonts as files, and there is no folder of letters anywhere on your computer to upload, because the stitches only exist at the moment the program types them out for you.

That is fine here. Broidry does not need the font itself. It needs one stitch file with the whole alphabet typed out in it, and your own software can make that in a few minutes. This works the same way whether your fonts live in Chroma, DesignShop, Hatch, Wilcom, Embrilliance or anything else that types letters and saves a stitch file.

Note: If your font did come as files you bought, you do not need any of this. Upload the per-letter files, or the zip they came in, with "I have per-letter files" instead, and the font is ready straight away.

Copy the alphabet out of Broidry first

Open Designs, go to the Fonts tab, and under Add your own fonts press "My font is built into my software". Broidry shows the exact lines to type: capital letters first, then lowercase, then numbers, with a space between every letter. Press Copy, or leave that page open while you work.

If your font has no lowercase letters, or no numbers, uncheck the box for it and that row drops off the list. Only type the letters your font actually has, or the letters will be matched up wrong.

Type it out in your own software

  1. 1Start a new lettering design and pick the font you want to bring over.
  2. 2Type the lines Broidry gave you, keeping the letters in that exact order and keeping a space between each one. Line breaks are free, so break the rows up wherever your hoop needs them.
  3. 3Set the letters at a comfortable size, around an inch tall, and leave them unjoined and in one color.
  4. 4Save the whole thing out as one stitch file. PES, DST and JEF all work, and DST is the one Chroma and DesignShop save.
Note: The order is the only thing that has to be exact. Broidry works out which letter is which by where it sits in the file, so a missing letter or a swapped pair puts the whole alphabet out of step.

Bring the file back to Broidry

On that same Fonts tab, give the font a name and drop your file in. Broidry splits it back apart into single letters, then shows you every letter in a grid with the character it belongs to underneath.

Nothing goes live until you say so. Check the grid, and if it is right, one press makes the font available on your order form. If a letter is under the wrong character or does not look right, press "Something's off — have us look at it" and we take it from there.

One thing to check before you sell in it

Fonts that came with your software are licensed to you by whoever made that software. Almost every one of them allows the embroidery you sell, which is what they are for, but that license is theirs and not ours. If you are unsure about a particular font, their own license page is the place that answers it.
